Popular culture (commonly known as pop culture) is the totality of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images and other phenomena that are deemed preferred per an informal consensus within the mainstream of a given culture, specifically Western culture of the early to mid 20th century and the emerging global mainstream of the late 20th to 21st century. Heavily influenced by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society. By contrast, folklore refers to the cultural mainstream of more local or pre-industrial societies. Popular culture is often viewed as being trivial and "dumbed-down" in order to find consensual acceptance throughout the mainstream. As a result, it comes under heavy criticism from various scientific and non-mainstream sources (most notably religious groups and countercultural groups) which deem it superficial, consumerist, sensationalist, and corrupted. The term "popular culture" itself is of 19th century coinage, in original usage referring to the education and "culturedness" of the lower classes. The term began to assume the meaning of a culture of the lower classes separate from and opposed to "true education" towards the end of the century, a usage that became established by the interbellum period. The current meaning of the term, culture for mass consumption, especially originating in the United States, is established by the end of World War II. The abbreviated form "pop culture" dates to the 1960s. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Examples in Pulp Fiction of ubiquitous popular culture subject matters? Q. I read this online, "What the film may be most renowned for, however, is its focus on highly stylized modes of speech. Tarantino elicits vivid responses from his audiences by incorporating ordinary banter about ubiquitous popular culture subject matters," and am wondering if anyone has any specific examples from pulp fiction. "does marsellus wallace look like a bitch!?" the whole conversation about the royale with cheese, french fries and mayo, etc. it's kind of hard to point of specific examples of this because this is someone's style of speech so it includes everything they say. in order to properly understand what the author of that passage is trying to say, i think it's best to observe and compare and contrast some of the character's speech. some of these characters include sam jackson's character, uma thurman's character, and ving rhame's character. they all have their own specific way of speaking and communicating a message. if you hold up one characters' dialogue to another you will see what i'm talking about Answered by TouchdownMyPants - Tue Nov 24 15:29:57 2009 Can popular culture be good for us? Q. I have been working on a research paper for college about the effects of popular culture on societies. I have tons of evidence that shows the negative side of pop culture, but I'm having a hard time finding information of the positive aspects of it, do you think pop culture even has positive aspects in society? Asked by maggielynn - Tue Dec 5 08:46:03 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Very intersesting question. I refer you to Wendy Griswold. She's considered one of the top researchers in the field of culture. While she might not come right out and discuss popular culture, you will be able to use her theory to discuss positive aspects of popular culture. also, look in the sociology of sport. There you will most likely find articles that discuss how popular culture (in the form of sport) bring strangers together and form camraderie. From here you will undoubtly move to Durkheim's notions of collective effervescence. Good luck! Answered by poohb2878 - Tue Dec 5 15:13:28 2006 How has James Bond impacted popular culture?
Q. People of the uk! How has James Bond impacted popular culture in your opinion? Asked by Amir A - Wed Jul 16 13:20:04 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Sorry! I'm from the "Colonies" but I think everyone likes to feel cool sometime in their life and James Bond certainly showed people what "Cool" was! James Bond provided some escapism from a person's life. He helped us "get away," so to speak. Answered by webwanderer - Wed Jul 16 13:25:25 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "popular culture" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
