Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Greek: χυμός, chymos, literally juice or sap, metaphorically, flavour), control human health and emotion.

People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to experience humour, i.e., to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a sense of humour. The hypothetical person lacking a sense of humour would likely find the behaviour induced by humour to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. Though ultimately decided by personal taste, the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends upon a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. For example, young children may favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery".

Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. The prevailing types of theories attempting to account for the existence of humour include psychological theories, the vast majority of which consider humour-induced behaviour to be very healthy; spiritual theories, which may, for instance, consider humour to be a "gift from God"; and theories which consider humour to be an unexplainable mystery, very much like a mystical experience.

Sense of humor, I guess I have a very sick and twisted one. How do I develop my sense of humor?
Q. I am 19 sophmore in college, and realized my sense of humor is not that great. Like people say jokes and everyone laughes but I just don't get it. And sometimes I just cannot think of funny things to say or how to react to things other people think is funny.

A. Make a mental copy of the jokes you read in YA and when you are with your friends in (real life) paste them into any situation you see fit. By the time you hit Senior year I'm sure you will have improved. I think it works like alcoholism, the first step is admitting that you have a problem, I'm proud of you little Ran for stepping out of denial.

Why do people find sexual humor so funny?
Q. I don't understand what's so funny about a normal biological function... Do you think urinating is funny too? Do you think eating a sandwich is funny? I don't understand. Personally I find sexual humor very vulgar and unnecessary.

Books about the sense of humor from an academic standpoint?
Q. I'd like to know about other books on "the sense of humor" studied from an academic point of view. I know Allport G has one but I havent been able to get a hold of it.

A. I'm not a scientist, so for questions like this I like the WNYC Radio Lab podcast because they do a good job of synthesizing difficult scientific questions in an entertaining and educational way. They've looked at laughter (which is related to but still separate from humor). In the process, they talk to scientists and refer to their work, so it's a good way to find actual scientists who are working on questions you're interested in: Laughter: Is it just a human thing? They mention a book about Laughter: Laughter: A Scientific Investigation Hope this is helpful.

Comedy has a popular meaning (stand-up, along with any discourse generally intended to amuse), which differs from its academic definition, namely the comic theatre, whose Western origins are found in Ancient Greece. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance pitting two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Comedy contains variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, and there are many recognized genres.
