How do the fermi levels of p and n-regions of an unbiased p-n junction adjust to become equal?
Q. The original fermi level of the p and n-regions taken separately are different due to difference in concentration and type of doping. However, at the junction, the energy level diagram usually depicts a common fermi level while conduction and valency bands are displaced. How does that happen?

A. Energy levels in materials are always relative. In other words, you can say that the conduction band is so many eV above the valence band, but it has no particularly absolute value. The Fermi level is simply the energy level of the topmost occupied electronic state (at T = 0). Thid once again is relative - you can say where it is with respect to say the valence band. Until, that is, you join the two materials. When you do this the energy of the topmost occupied state on the n side *must* be the same as that on the p side because the materials are in contact. If it were not, then electrons would flow into the lower energy states across the boundary until they were. Clearly, for these two levels to be the same across the boundary, the… [cont.]

How to prove that wheat stubble is sucking up all the available N?
Q. In a lettuce crop in the Yuma area; There is streaking in the field running perpendicular to the beds. The grower is blaming it on the spreader truck, but there is so much trash in the field and it is noticeably more where the plants are stunted. I pulled "good" and "bad" soil samples to be tested for NO3-N, NH4-N, Total N, and Total C. Is this all that I could do? What kind of results on the soil analysis will prove that a combine is at fault? A little more info: The "trash" is wheat stubble. It has been incorporated into the soil by tillage (ripping, discing, leveling and listing). A. you could have obtained an Organic Matter test. Much of the straw is decomposing which requires Nitrogen to be bound and not available to the plants. there should be very little NO3-N where the straw is heavier, the ammonical N should be higher so I would look at the ratio of the two as well as the ratio to Total N. Until the Organic Matter starts releasing some Nitrogen there will be little change in the Carbon Content. Total Carbon can be very misleading if the soil is an alkaline pH and the carbon is present in CO3-

Q. There is a BLT Salad made through a local food store chain. The chain is Pick-n-save. I would like to know the BLT salad recipe or where they buy it from.

A. What I would do is go to the Pick-n-save and ask them what they put on their BLT sandwiches that makes them so good. Then follow what Sugar PIe wrote.
