Q. When you find the area between curves is there anyway to find if you calculate it with respect to x or y. Also, if you calculate with respect to x do you use vertical lines and horizontal lines with respect to y or is it the opposite way. Please answer both questions!!! Really the only thing hampering you from switching the variables is the ability to change the function. Polynomials, for example, would be nasty, and sometimes impossible, to integrate if you changed the variables. If you have y = x + 2x + 5 and you wanted, for some weird reason, to integrate w.r.t. y then you'd have to make this a function of y, that is x = f(y).
