SynonymsAntonymsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Disability is defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities." An individual may also qualify as disabled if he/she has had an impairment in the past or is seen as disabled based on a personal or group standard or norm. Such impairments may include physical, sensory, and cognitive or intellectual impairments. Mental disorders (also known as psychiatric or psychosocial disability) and various types of chronic disease may also be considered qualifying disabilities. A disability may occur during a person's lifetime or may be present from birth. Current issuesCurrent issues and debates surrounding disability include social and political rights, social inclusion and citizenship. In developed countries, the debate has moved beyond a concern about the perceived cost of maintaining dependent people with disabilities to an effort of finding effective ways to ensure that people with disabilities can participate in and contribute to society in all spheres of life. Many are concerned, however, that the greatest need is in developing nations -- where the vast bulk of the estimated 650 million people with disabilities reside. A great deal of work is needed to address concerns ranging from accessibility and education to self-empowerment and self-supporting employment and beyond. In the past few years, disability rights activists have also focused on obtaining full citizenship for the disabled. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License I-130 - How to bring a disabled brother with my parents to United States under immigration laws? Q. I recently became a citizen, and now I would like to sponsor my parents and my brother for family based green card. The problem comes as my oldest brother who is older than 21 and is mentally disabled, and dependent on my parents. Now if I apply for my parents and my brother, my parents will get approval much quicker than my brother. My brother can't stay alone and needs to come with my parents. What should I do in this circumstances ? Any ideas or exceptions are there by which they can all come together ? Would adoption of my brother be a solution ? If you want three people to join you in the U.S., and you want them all to come here at the same time, they will have to come when the last of the three finally gets his immigrant visa. If your brother needs your parents for support, your parents will need to postpone their arrival until your brother's visa is ready which might be about 11 years from now. Adoption is out of the question as he is too old, and there are no exceptions in the law for mentally disabled persons. In fact, some mentally disabled persons are not admissible. You should petition for your brother right away. You can wait a while before you need to petition for your parents. And good for you for wanting to help a child that someone didn't want due to their disabilities. Q. I just wondered this because we have laws that promote anti-discrimination, and anti-oppression, and also promote the rights of people with learning difficulties, or physically disabled. I just wondered if this would allow the UK to be ruled by a King or Queen with such difficulties - especially since they religiously intolerant. They don't allow Catholics to be in the Royal Family (because Catholics answer to the Pope, not the Queen) So I just wondered if they would actually allow someone with life difficulties rule the country, or would it pass to the next "perfect" heir? Asked by claire b - Sun Jan 4 03:26:37 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. Difficult to say, depending on how severe their difficulties were. A physical disability would not be as major as a learning difficulty. If they had severe learning disabilities, they would possibly reign as a figurehead with a regent.
