History is the study (teaching) of the past, with special attention to the written record of the activities of human beings over time. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it often attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and the lessons history teaches. A famous quote by George Santayana has it that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history.

A. What sank the U.S. S. Maine? When was money first used and by whom? What was the silk road? What was Peter the Great called "The Great"? What were Martin Luther's reasons for his 95 thesis? What was the Indian Removal Act and what part did President Jackson play in it? Who were the Moundbuilders? Who were the Acadians, why and where were they expelled from, and where did they settle? Who was Joseph Smith? Where did the Mormons originate and where did they end up? (Trace their route to Salt Lake City) What different ethnic groups help to build the transcontinental railroad?

How will history remember the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent invasion of Iraq?
Q. In both the US and abroad: - What will the history books teach about them? - How will they be presented to children in school?

A. History has usualy been written by the victors, but in this age of communication - especialy the internet - that's becoming harder and harder to pull off. Plus, it's very difficult to see who the actual victors are in this one. What happened on 9/11 was a tragedy that caused untold suffering for thousands of people. Sadly, the way the Bush administration have chosen to deal with it and the mess that has followed will probably overshadow that as time goes on. I can't speak for how it will be viewed in America, as there seems to be more of an isolaionist viewpoint persued there (not by all Americans, that's not a diss to them, but by the government and media). Look at how many Americans believe that WWII didn't start until Pearl Harbour… [cont.]

How would history have changed if the Vikings had settled North America?
Q. If the Vikings hadn't left their settlement in Newfoundland which they founded in circa 1000 AD, how would history have changed? Would a nearly 500 year head start in the New World launch the Vikings into a world power?

A. It's an interesting hypothesis. There would likely have been a lot of red-headed Indians... One thing that wouldn't change would be the days of the week - the names we use (or at least, 4 of the 7) all honor Norse gods. Tuesday (Twys' day) Wednesday (Woden's day) Thursday, (Thors Day) Friday (Freya's day)
