A surname is a name added to a given name and is part of a personal name. In many cases a surname is a family name; the family-name meaning first appeared in 1375. Many dictionaries define "surname" as a synonym of "family name". It is also known as a "last name". In some cultures, the surname may be a patronymic or matronymic. Some cultures, for example the Burmese and some Javanese, do not use surnames.

In some cases, such as Chinese Indonesians and Chinese Thais, certain ethnic groups are subject to political pressure to change their surnames, in which case surnames can lose their family-name meaning.

Who were the two players in the World Cup Final who had surnames with the same etymological root?
Q. One on each side : different names but both very English, dating back to Doomsday. The names are NOT Anglo-Saxon, Welsh, Scots or Irish. Thanks komindie, for your interesting response. However neither name is remotely English!

A. Cueto = Van den Berg Cueto= "hillock"; cf. Catalan cot "hill" Van den Berg = literally from the hill/mountain (no mountains in Holland so must be hill!) Montgomery=English, Scottish, and northern Irish (of Norman origin): habitational name from a place in Calvados, France, so named from Old French mont hill + a Germanic personal name composed of the elements guma man + ric power . In Ireland this surname has been Gaelicized as Mac Iomaire and in Scotland as Mac Gumaraid. Sorry should be ; Cueto=Montgomery Oh damn! Ill try again.

Would some one be so kind as to enlighten me on the meanings of the surnames Rawlings and Halbasch?
Q. My Question is barely related to a school assignment yet I have not found any information in geneological and hereldry sources. If you know of a famous Halbasch please tell me. Thank You.

A. Rawling English: from the Middle English personal name Rawlin, Old French Raulin, a double diminutive of Raw 1, with the Anglo-Norman French suffixes -el and -in. (Rawlings is the patronymic form of this name) Can't find Halbasch on any "legitimate" site.
