Answered by Bridget - Sun Sep 17 21:56:16 2006 Why did the Europeans come to North America during the establishment of the Thirteen Colonies?
Q. I need atleast two reasons as to what attracted them to come and settle in N. America. Asked by Jeffrey - Mon Sep 17 18:52:15 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Timber was a resource that was, even 400 years ago, a scarce resource in Europe. A lot of New World timber was exported to the Old World. Whaling and fishing was another reason Europeans settled North America. The fishing grounds in and around George's Banks were abundant with cod and other food fish. Whale oil was needed to fuel lamps. Tobacco and cotton farming were other very early industries. European investors paid for the transportation of people and the establishment of the settlements. In return they were supplied with highly marketable goods. The idea that North America was settled by those seeking religious refuge is just a small part of the actual story. Money was the biggest motivator. Answered by wry humor - Mon Sep 17 19:13:54 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "thirteen colonies" |
